Sermon on Sunday
When the Sky Falls
One of the greatest challenges to faith is the reality of evil. How can an all-powerful God who is also completely good and loving allow evil to exist and devastate so many lives? Today, as we remember the evil that was manifest at the Twin Towers fifteen years ago, we will consider the exhortations of the prophet Amos – a man who spoke to a people staring down the barrel of tremendous suffering and devastation. What should be our response to evil? Where is God when evil comes upon us?
Gracious Father, you desire not the death of sinners but rejoice when they repent and return to you; in times of blessing and times of calamity continually turn our hearts toward you, and so move within us by your Holy Spirit that the barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; and that, our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
