Sermon on Sunday
The Renewing of All Things
Ah…prophecy. Thick as mud and oftentimes about as clear. Hard to know what to do with it, but it has a way of getting between your toes and sticking with you. There it stands, seemingly fixed by some voice from the past, but nonetheless drawing the future towards its foreseen inevitability. Prophecy reminds us that history has a Sovereign who is working things out according to His purposes. Prophecy can stir our imaginations and inspire us, comforting and encouraging us. It can also disrupt, disturb and discomfort us. Our readings today will likely have both effects – one reading reminding us that life in this world is full of suffering and hardship, testing and trial, but also purpose; the other reading reminding us that there is a Life beyond this life where all will finally be well and right, and the struggles and sorrows will be no more.
