Sermon on Sunday
Sisters, Hospitality, and the One Thing Necessary
The painting depicted here is one of many that capture the scene at Martha’s house in today’s Gospel reading. The food and items of hospitality are rendered so large that you notice the preparations first and only then begin to notice Jesus at the end of the table. Sounds entirely too much like my life. I am easily distracted by the work of the moment to the point where the work often seems larger than life and Jesus is marginalized to the periphery or fades from view altogether. The tale of these two sisters point us all to the one thing necessary for our souls to flourish – and the Good News is that it has nothing to do with the food and dirty dishes on the table.
