In the 1800’s, Nathaniel Hawthorne was known for his morbid curiosity of human behavior. His short story Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment is no exception, as a science experiment is eagerly tested on four of Dr. Heidegger’s closest friends from year’s past. Dr. Heidegger’s question: If humans had the opportunity to go back in time and reclaim their youth, would they use the knowledge and wisdom from the present for personal and societal change? Dr. Heidegger’s discovery: Wait and see! Jesus offers us an invitation as well, though his hypothesis is quite different. Jesus’ question: As I am ushering in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth with my baptism in the Jordan, will you accept my personal invitation to receive forgiveness for your sins–and a transformation of heart and life–that can only come from an eternal relationship with me? Jesus’ discovery: He never gives up, and loves us beyond all measure.
