Family Ministry Director / Family Minister (if applicant is clergy)

Overview

St Michael’s vision is to transform hearts through Jesus Christ.  Consistent with our vision is our priority to minister to children and families.  We are hiring a Family Ministry Director who will serve as a member of the formation and pastoral team and have responsibility for overseeing the nursery, preschool, children’s, and youth ministry programs.   The Family Ministry Director will have the freedom to develop the family ministry in partnership with support from the Youth Minister and supporting staff. The children and family ministries may include Sunday morning and evening family services, intergenerational formation and fellowship, and outreach opportunities for the whole family.

Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Provide safe and biblical environment for all students ages 0-11 to develop fundamental knowledge and skills of the Christian faith and life
  • Work in concert with other staff and volunteers to facilitate other opportunities for faith formation, worship, and community life for the children and families
  • Communicate with parents and the parish about children and family ministry and related programs
  • Build relationships with the families, the congregation and community, including participation in the work of pastoral care as appropriate
  • Provide leadership and oversight to all children and family activities; including but not limited to: nursery, Sunday school, Toddler Time, Baptism and First Communion Preparation, Vacation Bible School, and Bible Camp
  • Develop (as necessary), assess and provide continuous improvements to all supporting programs and curriculums
  • Recruit and train staff and volunteers as required to support Family Ministries and in compliance with applicable regulations
  • Plan and direct the annual Christmas pageant and Holy Week: Road to Resurrection
  • Assure ministries maintain a balanced ministry of spiritual, physical, and social growth
  • Assure training and regular involvement of children and family ministry staff
  • Assure proper care of facilities
  • Provide formal and informal forums for frequent communications
  • Be an advisor / resource for clergy
  • Maintain a well-planned, carefully balanced program throughout the year coordinated with the church calendar of events, with approval from the rector
  • Pre-schedule all activities in their entirety. Publish same to staff, parents, and youth in a timely fashion. Provide information and encourage attendance to all activities
  • Attend weekly meeting with staff for prayer and planning
  • Review and discuss annual job performance evaluation

  • Significant experience with youth ministries and activities
  • Professional experience in childhood education desired
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for nursery facilities and workers
  • Strong communication skills – oral and written
  • Good computer, business software (Microsoft office, Google Apps) and social media skills
  • Ability to recruit and retain volunteers
  • Ability to work with minimal day-to-day oversight
  • Positive attitude and friendly demeanor

  • College degree (BS or BA) and a minimum of 5 years of experience desired
  • Lay ministry or ordained candidate

Hours and Reporting

This is a full time position estimated at 40-45 hours per week.  Compensation is commensurate with experience and benefits are provided.  Hours will often include evenings and weekends.  Daily work location is typically St Michael’s Church at 71 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401 but flexible work environment is possible. The position reports to Saint Michael’s Church Chief of Staff.
