Discipleship Director

Overview

St Michael’s vision is to transform hearts through Jesus Christ.  Consistent with the recommendations of the Discipleship Task Force, we are expanding our Discipleship ministry with several new constructs including launching community focused connect groups, an intensive discipleship track and an innovative outdoor worship and discipleship initiative.   To support these new activities and strengthen the leadership and coordination of the ministry we are hiring a Discipleship Director.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop the strategy for the growth and success of St Michael’s Discipleship ministry consistent with the recommendations of the Discipleship Task Force.
  • Finalize the design, plan the implementation and start at least three Holy City Connect groups (target September/October 2017)
  • Recruit, develop and train Holy City Connects (HCC) leadership teams (target date September)
  • Identify curricula to support HCC initial operation
  • Working with the Discipleship Task Force, complete the design and plan the implementation for the intensive discipleship track (target pilot launch for January 2018)
  • Recruit, develop and train volunteers for the new intensive discipleship track
  • Develop a communications plan and support digital learning through a new channel, the Holy City Speaks platform
  • Working with members of the Discipleship Task Force, develop a strategy and plan for outdoor worship and discipleship events
  • Support volunteers in the implementation of discipleship events
  • Support continued discipleship activities in Tool Time on Sunday mornings
  • Develop and implement a strategy to strengthen coordination and support for Life Groups
  • Develop and launch connections/ spiritual gifts class

Success in this Role

  • Builds positive relationships with church leadership, staff and volunteers
  • Discipleship ministry courses are delivered with scriptural integrity, high quality, and within budgets
  • Discipleship ministry grows and expands with the successful launch of Holy City Connects, the intensive discipleship track and outdoor worship/discipleship
  • Discipleship sessions are well staffed with trained volunteer teams
  • Discipleship volunteers have positive relationships with each other and with the St Michael’s Discipleship Director
  • Holy City Connects and Discipleship Track develops a pipeline of ministry leaders

  • Strong knowledge of the faith and holy scripture
  • Experience with multiple discipleship constructs and courses
  • Experience with leadership training and development
  • Strong communication skills – oral and written
  • Good computer, business software (Microsoft office, Google Apps) and social media skills
  • Ability to recruit and retain volunteers
  • Ability to work with minimal day-to-day oversight
  • Positive attitude and friendly demeanor

  • Reputation for integrity
  • Professional experience in education or adult learning is desired
  • College degree (BS or BA) and a minimum of 5 years of experience desired

Hours and Reporting

This is a part time position estimated at 30 hours per week.  Compensation is commensurate with experience and benefits are provided.  Hours may include evenings and weekends.  Daily work location is typically St Michael’s Church at 71 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401 but flexible work environment is possible. The position reports to Director, Evangelism and Discipleship.
