Alpha Director / Alpha Minister (if applicant is clergy)


St Michael’s vision is to transform hearts through Jesus Christ.  For over 20 years, St Michael’s Church has grown and sustained an Alpha ministry that lives into this vision.  The ministry has been a source of local evangelism, foundational education in Christian beliefs, discipleship and growth.  Much of the parish has participated at one time or another in the Alpha course.  St Michael’s is seeking an Alpha ministry leader to build on the previous successes of the ministry and expand number of Alpha courses offered and grow the number of new participants in the course.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop a strategy for the growth and success of St Michael’s Alpha ministry as an element of St Michael’s Church vision to “transform hearts through Jesus Christ”
  • Prayer and spiritual preparation for all St Michael’s Alpha courses
  • Plan and execute for two (at a minimum) Alpha sessions (Spring and Fall) typically held on Tuesday evenings on the St Michael’s campus
  • Provide leadership and support for young adult ministries such as The Gate
  • Recruit and train volunteer team for Alpha courses and young adult ministries
  • Supporting our partner, Church of the Resurrection in North Charleston, in developing an Alpha ministry
  • Secure contracts and providing oversight to vendors for catering, tents, outdoor heaters, etc. as needed
  • Purchase supplies such as tableware, tablecloths, etc. for Alpha events
  • Assure proper care of facilities used for Alpha storage and events
  • Plan and execute all Alpha related events
  • Plan and execute St Michael’s adult confirmation class (I Like Mike course)
  • Develop strategy and plan for marketing Alpha and I Like Mike
  • Working in partnership with St Michael’s Communications ministry, develop high quality communication products related to Alpha and I Like Mike

  • Builds positive relationships with church leadership, staff and volunteers
  • Alpha sessions and I Like Mike are delivered with spiritual integrity, high quality, and within budgets
  • Alpha ministry grows and expands supporting more guests and sessions
  • Alpha sessions are staffed with well trained volunteer teams
  • Alpha volunteer teams have positive relationships with each other and with the St Michael’s Alpha Director
  • Alpha “graduates” become 1) volunteers and support future Alpha courses and 2) engaged in our faith community as they continue their spiritual journey
  • I Like Mike classes include recent Alpha “graduates”

Attributes and Skills

  • Personal commitment to Jesus Christ and pursuit of spiritual growth in the Christian faith
  • Firm commitment to St Michael’s Church and the vision of transforming hearts through Jesus Christ
  • Significant experience with the Alpha course
  • Strong communication skills – oral and written
  • Good computer, business software (Microsoft office, Google Apps) and social media skills
  • Ability to recruit and retain volunteers
  • Ability to work with minimal day-to-day oversight
  • Positive attitude and friendly demeanor
  • Collaborative leadership style
  • Commitment to excellence in all tasks
  • Professional behavior in all circumstances
  • Reputation for integrity
  • College degree (BS or BA) and a minimum of 2 years of experience desired
  • Lay ministry or ordained candidate

Hours and Reporting

This is a full time position estimated at 40-45 hours per week.  Compensation is commensurate with experience and benefits are provided.  Hours will often include evenings and weekends.  Daily work location is typically St Michael’s Church at 71 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401 but flexible work environment is possible. The position reports to Saint Michael’s Church Chief of Staff.
