Vivaldi Gloria & Concert Series by Matthew Wilkinson

Free admission, no tickets necessary. Donations will be accepted at the door. This concert was made possible due to the generosity of Faith Ventures Foundation, Inc.

This December 14th, St. Michael’s choir will be performing the Vivaldi Gloria in an Advent concert that will be both an evening of worship and exquisite music. Members of the CSO and other local musicians will constitute a chamber orchestra that will be accompanying the choir on the Gloria. This work is a masterly setting of the Greater Doxology, or Gloria in Excelsis Deo, one of the most important worship texts of the church. It begins with the angel’s adoration of Christ, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men.” The structure of the text is meant to imitate the Psalter, and is one of the earliest Christian hymns known to the church. Both East and West have used the Gloria in worship since the fourth century.

Vivaldi set this eleven movement work  with solos, choruses, duets, and variegated instrumentation to denote the beauty of the text and contemplate its theological significance. For example, in the movement Domine Deus, Rex Coelestis, which translates to “Lord God, King of Heaven,” the violin or oboe has a duet with the soprano in the form of a barcarolle. In opera, a barcarolle generally signified a duet between lovers. Therefore, Vivaldi text paints words that would generally construe a sense of transcendence and power with a contemplation on divine love, thus compelling us to address God, the Lord God, King of Heaven, with a sense of love and adoration.

Our vision is to utilize this event as a catalyst to initiate a St. Michael’s concert series that will accentuate the liturgical year and actively engage the community. During Lent we will focus on ministering to the four corners of law by hosting a free lunch-time organ recital series, which will include prayers, Scriptures, and information about how to become involved at St. Michael’s. We will also have special music during Holy Week and are looking to have a brass concert during Eastertide to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord.

Please come enjoy a fabulous Advent concert and worship experience on December 14th at 6:30 pm and stay tuned for our upcoming concert series.
