Children’s Christian Formation
Every Sunday, while in the nursery, our toddlers have Toddler Church. Using Gospel’s Light Movers and Shakers (2s and 3s) Sunday School Curriculum, the toddlers learn Bible truths that change their lives. The lessons are designed to present the message of God’s love in a language that the children will understand through stories, activities, songs, and art projects. There are toddler activity sheets as well as Family Take-Home Papers provided each week. A team of four teachers rotates to teach this class.
In addition to Toddler Church, a Weekly Reader Program exists in which parent volunteers read Bible stories to the toddlers to introduce the very basics of the Christian faith to our little ones. Nursery staff members are present during both of these programs to provide additional care for the children.
In September 2004, we began using the David C. Cook Bible-in-Life (Anglican Edition) Curriculum with our Pre-K through Fifth Grade children. This curriculum, which covers the Bible over a three-year period, helps the children to connect to the day’s lesson and to see where it fits into their personal lives. It allows the children to explore the truths of the Bible as well as interact with it in meaningful ways. Finally the children are taught to apply the Bible truths to their everyday lives.
The Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Graders Meeting on the second floor of the Hollingsworth House, 9 St. Michael's Alley, from 9:30 am until 10:15 am, the Pre-K through Fifth grade children are divided into three different classes: Pre-K and Kindergarten, 1st through 3rd graders, and 4th and 5th Graders. Teams of experienced Sunday School teachers guide the children trhough the lesson each week focusingmuch of the time on the Bible story. The younger children often make a small craft to reinforce the Biblical concept or Bible story being taught. Each class has take-home sheets to read at home which dig deeper into the stories.
Most Sundays there are outreach projects for the children to work on prior to Sunday School, beginning at 9:30 a.m. These projects include making cards for the residents of Bishop Gadsden or the victims of Hurricane Katrina, making banners or decorations for our missionaries, helping with bulletin boards, and making Jesse tree ornaments for trees for the residents of Canterbury House.

During this children's service, which begins at 10:30 am in the Belser Building (14 St. Michael's Alley), the children have an opportunity to sing, pray, and praise the Lord! For many years, the groups met separately: Children's Chapel (pre-K - 1st grade) and Children's Worship (2nd - 5th), but in order to allow the children to be exposed to more singing opportuninties, we have combine the two groups for the worship part of the program. Jeanne Martin plays the piano each week for this service and we are grateful for this gift.
With Jeannie, four adult leader teams lead worship each week. The adult leader teams are responsible for preparing the lesson presented each week. On the first Sunday of each month, a new theme and Bible verse is introduced with our puppet, Scruffy. Bible verse memorization is encouraged and the Bible verse is always included in The Messenger, our church newsletter, to that parents can help with this at home. During the course of the month, the children are exposed to the theme/Bible verse through puppets, stories, activities, sometimes crafts, and a viceo. The children rejoin their parents in the sanctuary during The Passing of the Peace.
On the last sunday of the month, when our 10:30 worship in the Church is Morning Prayer, the children attend the 10:30 am service with their parents and process out during the sermon hymn. On these Sundays, the children are taught something about our liturgy and what makes us Anglicans.
Noah’s Nursery is seen by the Christian Formation Commission as a ministry. Not only do we provide the best of care for your children, we also try to share the love and Good News of Christ Jesus in our nursery. An infant and toddler nurseries are available at St. Michael’s. Our trained staff as well as volunteer parents are present for Sunday morning nurseries. Both nurseries are available from 8:45am until noon on Sundays and are available for church activities/programs upon request. For more information or to reserve the use of the nursery, contact our Nursery Director, Kate Heare.
